Mission Statement
The New York State Community Affairs Bureau (NYSCAB), a nonprofit corporation, strives to be responsive to the community affairs needs of our State's citizens by serving as liaisons to state government, all levels of local government, all levels of State and local police, sheriff's and other law enforcement agencies, business and community leaders and individual citizens.
Description
The initiative took shape shortly before Eric Garner was killed on Staten Island in July 2014. We helped the NYPD until two Police Officers were assassinated in December. Then, a local elected official impaneled a Clergy Leaders Council. An NYSCAB executive was a member. The name "Clergy Emergency Response Team" was chosen. CERT was created & after meeting w/ clergy, city, elected & police officials, C.A.B. was began. The team worked successfully w/ many, but it became apparent in July 2017 that the services provided by the initiative should be provided to all of NYS instead of only to those in NYC. NYSCAB began in July 2018. As a volunteer organization, we provide community affairs services by forming partnerships w/ community leaders, civic organizations, communities of faith & concerned citizens where we work together to create solutions for problems that arise within our communities. We provide Community Affairs, Chaplaincy & Community-Police Relations programming & we oversee the Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) Program, a locally-driven Citizens Corps program that allows community members to offer their time & talents to NYSCAB & local law enforcement agencies. We established the NYSCAB VIPS Program which is registered w/ the national VIPS Program. We're a certifying organization for the President's Volunteer Service Award.
