In memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, we invite you to observe MLK Day as a "day on, not a day off" by improving your Tacoma community and helping to improve its vital natural areas. We will be out at the Place of Circling Waters, one of the Port of Tacoma's wetland restoration projects, planting native trees and shrubs. This will improve the natural habitat and ecological functions of this ecologically important site that will benefit the greater Tacoma community. The Place of Circling Waters
This unique location, which boasts an intertidal marsh, the salmon-bearing Hylebos Creek, and forested open space, serves a vital role in the health of many of our beloved Pacific Northwest species, including birds, salmon, and our resident orcas. This ecological gem has been reclaimed from a former mining site and dump, and you can be part of restoring this important habitat by planting native species!
Everyone can help! All ages are welcome and no experience is necessary. We provide all of the tools and training needed. So bring along your friends and family and get your hands dirty!
Please RSVPby emailing Ali Erskine at aerskine@forterra.org

Mission Statement
Forterra's mission is to act with immediacy to protect, enhance and steward our region's most precious resources--its communities and its landscapes. Since 1989, we have been working toward a future in which our children and grandchildren can experience nature in and around our urban environments.
Description
Forterra conserves land by working with individuals, companies and local governments. We strive to maximize the ecological value of land, while meeting the needs of landowners. We may accept land as a donation, purchase it, or transfer it to public ownership. We often serve as a broker to identify and negotiate the most effective ownership to protect important lands. We establish conservation easements to preserve special features. For each and every property, we explore available strategies or create new ones to provide permanent protection. Forterra has established a Conservation Agenda for our region, with specific priorities and methods for each type of landscape. Current initiatives include the protection of working forests on the foothills of the Cascades, and the creation of salmon sanctuaries along our region's highest quality rivers and streams.
