Purpose of the Trail Guide Volunteer Program
The purpose of the trail guide volunteer program at Wild Basin is to engage and train community volunteers to provide guided hikes to school groups across Austin. Wild Basin is only able to serve these groups with the help of its well-trained and committed volunteers.
In addition to providing meaningful educational experiences in the outdoors for students and visitors, Wild Basin strives to provide a solid foundation of initial training and on-going educational opportunities for our guides.
Training and Trail Guide Requirements:
- Increase your knowledge of Central Texas flora and fauna
- Develop interpretive guide skills and gain experience leading groups
- Make connections with new people in the community
- Gain access to specialized training opportunities
- Earn community service hours (if desired)
- Enjoy knowing that you are making a difference
Application Process:
Email mfaris@stedwards.edu for a volunteer application. Applications due January 15, 2019. Acceptance will be based on understanding of the mission of Wild Basin Creative Research Center and committing to the trail guide training process and post-training service requirements. Selections will be made without regard to race, religion, sex, disability, marital status, age or national origin. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by late January 2019. Training is planned for two dates in February 2019.

Mission Statement
Wild Basin exists to protect and maintain its urban wilderness and to promote the importance of environmental education, research, conservation, and preservation.
Description
Through collaborations with St. Edward's University and Travis County, Wild Basin Creative Research Center serves as a local gateway to the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, facilitating research, public awareness and preservation of Austin’s wildlands. In addition to the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler, Wild Basin is host to several at-risk and threatened species of both flora and fauna.
Wild Basin hosts field trips for local students year-round and relies on the generous service of dedicated volunteers to serve as trail guides.
