Do you want to make a difference? Are you interested in volunteering your medical expertise to improve rural health?

The Tshemba Foundation aims to increase access to health care in under-resourced communities in the northeastern region of South Africa. To further this aim, Tshemba has established a medical volunteering program where doctors offer clinical support to patients in a public hospital and local clinics, and provide education and training to local medical staff.

Tshemba is now appealing to doctors around the world to help it address a critical health care gap in rural South Africa where doctor shortages are posing substantial challenges to adequate health care. We welcome interest from all potential volunteers; however, the current greatest need in the area is for Family physicians, Obstetricians/Gynaecologists, Paediatricians, Internists, General Surgeons and Anesthesiologists.

Volunteers will experience a stimulating and challenging working environment, treat conditions and cases not usually seen in urban areas, and help leave a legacy of improved quality of care by sharing knowledge and skills with local staff who are eager to learn.

Volunteers, and their partners, are given accommodations in a secure, beautiful lodge situated in a "Big 5" conservation area, free of charge, where they can safely rest, relax and take in the peaceful wonders around them.

Doctors who have volunteered with Tshemba tell us that they have been re-energized and transformed by the experience, and their passion for medicine reignited.

If you have any questions or would like to further discuss volunteering your time, please contact us at info@tshembafoundation.org

Mission Statement

The Tshemba Foundation is a non-profit organisation with a vision of fair and equal healthcare for all people in South Africa’s rural northeast. Our mission is to benefit the region’s overall healthcare system and provide volunteers with a stimulating and challenging skills-sharing and networking environment.

Description

The Tshemba Foundation is a non-profit organisation with a vision of fair and equal healthcare for all people in South Africa’s rural northeast. This unique medical volunteering programme provides the opportunity for healthcare professionals to treat, teach and learn, while also finding refuge in the quiet and beauty of a private game reserve.

Tshemba’s aim is to attract South African and international healthcare professionals from a wide range of disciplines, to volunteer their time and expertise for short- or long-term stays. Our volunteers contribute to existing services, supporting and complementing the work of local staff.

The focus of our volunteer effort is Tintswalo Hospital, which is based at Acornhoek, about 38 km from the Kruger National Park’s Orpen Gate. We also support a number of primary healthcare and NGO clinics in the area, as well as a growing community outreach programme.

As a Tshemba volunteer, you can enjoy tranquil and tasteful accommodation free of charge. This is the perfect escape from a hard day’s work. We offer a scenic hideaway and true bushveld refuge surrounded by an array of game, bird species and the great outdoors.
