Lead Rescuer: Drive the Food Bank of Iowa refrigerated van to pick-up surplus food from retail donors (grocers, restaurants, etc.) and deliver directly to local agencies (community kitchens, food pantries, shelters, etc.) that feed our neighbors in need.
Assistant Rescuer: Assist the Lead Rescuer (driver) with pick-up of surplus food from retail donors (grocers, restaurants, etc.) and deliver directly to local agencies (community kitchens, food pantries, shelters, etc.) that feed our neighbors in need.
Emergency Rescuer: Fill in as a Lead or Assistant Rescuer on an on-call basis to drive or ride along in the Food Bank of Iowa refrigerated van to pick-up surplus food from retail donors (grocers, restaurants, etc.) and deliver directly to local agencies (community kitchens, food pantries, shelters, etc.) that feed our neighbors in need.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prep van with all necessary equipment before departing Food Bank of Iowa
- Drive designated route to pick-up product from donor, load into vehicle, sort, weigh, and store in refrigerated van.
- Deliver product to designated partner agency and assist with shopping by aggregating product, weighing, and releasing product to agency
- Willing to work as a team of two to lift.
Qualifications:
- Must be able to stand move, bend, and lift 20 lbs.
- Valid Driver’s license
- 18 years of age or older
- Must pass a background check
- Must commit to a scheduled weekly shift for a minimum of 6 months or serve as an emergency rescuer to fill in for volunteers unable to fulfill their commitment for that week!
Support/Training: Instructions will be provided as an orientation before your first shift. Addresses of the locations will be provided and volunteers will follow the same route for each shift. Instruction manual will be available inside the FBOI refrigerated van.
Age Requirement: Minimum age of 18
Dress Code: Closed-toed shoes are required; no exceptions. Dress comfortably with consideration of the weather each day.
Location: Volunteers will start and end each shift at Food Bank of Iowa (2220 E .17 th St Des Moines, IA 50312). Pickups and drop-offs will all be within the Des Moines metro.

From the time the dock doors opened in 1982, we have maintained our No. 1 priority - maximizing "food in - food out" to meet the critical needs of a diverse population through our network of partner agencies in 55 Iowa counties.
As a non-profit food bank, our primary role is to provide food to the charitable agencies offering direct service to hungry Iowans.
These partner agencies include:
- Food pantries
- Soup kitchens
- Homeless shelters
- Shelters for victims of domestic violence
- Nonprofit day care centers
- Residential care centers
- Child and senior programs
Along with traditional food banking, the Food Bank of Iowa also operates three successful programs: Backpack Buddies, HUSH and the Fresh Produce Project.
