Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12th grade classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects based on the theme of the author's book.
You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.

About the program: Sixth-graders read Serafina’s Promise by Ann E. Burg, a novel in verse about a Haitian girl with the secret dream of going to school to become a doctor. Working with coaches, students will revise a narrative they’ve written about themselves to transform the prose into verse to match the book’s style.
