Our volunteer guides make nature come alive for our young visitors. We use a discovery approach to awaken children’s curiosity about the natural world, while developing a sense of responsibility for plants, animals, and habitats. Guides lead scheduled tours for groups at Garden in the Woods from April 16 to October 31. Tours usually take about 1.5 hours and follow a trail through the natural woodland, along a beautiful brook, by a vernal pool, through our children’s play area, next to a coastal sand plain, and into a bog with carnivorous plants.
No experience necessary, training provided. We ask that you volunteer once a week during the spring and fall school months and occasionally during the summer. Share your enthusiasm for nature with young children, grades Pre-K - grade 5. You can choose which days and groups you would like to sign up for.
In addition to sharing and discovering nature with others, guides receive free admission to Garden in the Woods. Guides also enjoy opportunities to learn, grow as individuals, and to share with others who have compatible interests. Active guides who lead 8 or more tours a year have the opportunity to take free classes with the Society, space permitting. Guides also enjoy special volunteer programs ranging from garden tours to slide presentations and lectures at brown-bag lunches. Seasonal talks and walks are also offered as refreshers for guides.
