New volunteer training opportunity to become a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) of Orange, Sullivan or Ulster Counties. Help look out for the best interests of children who are in foster care due to abuse and neglect.
In order to become a CASA, you must complete a 30 hour training and 10 hours of court watching. Afterward, you will be sworn in by the Family Court Judges. We are considered the "eyes and ears of the court" and "voice of the child" appointed to monitor court orders and the children. We submit written reports to the Judge on the progress of the children and attend every court hearing involving the family. We strive to make sure the child's needs are being met so things don't slip through the cracks. The CASA reports provide the Judge with additional information on which to base decisions about the best interest of the children in order for them to gain permanency, whether it is a return to their parent(s) or termination and adoption into a loving home of their own.
