Minds Matter

Overview:

Minds Matter coaches promising high school students from low income families to prepare better for undergrad to secure a brighter future. Learn more about Minds Matter Seattle Chapter on the website mindsmatterseattle.org.

As Director of Mentee Recruitment you would maintain relationships with high school counselors, administrators, and students in the Seattle, Highline, and nearby school districts. The Director of Recruitment is tasked with recruiting students to apply to our organization, reviewing applications, interviewing candidates, and working with accepted students throughout the school year. This role would be an executive committee member. On the EC you have an opportunity to shape the Minds Matter organization to best support our mission. Please get in touch if you have an interest and experience working with non-profits and feel you can help add to the bottom line of our quickly growing organization.

Time Commitment: ~2 hours per week ongoing, including 1 Saturday session per month from approximately 2:00pm - 4:00pm. We observe national and public holidays.

Mission Statement

Minds Matter connects driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college, create their future, and change the world.

Description

Minds Matter mentees are low-income, high-potential high school students. Each mentee is paired with two dedicated, college-educated mentors, who provide personalized, ongoing support over the course of three years, starting the mentee’s sophomore year. Every non-holiday Saturday during the school year, mentees attend four-hour sessions. In the mornings, test prep and writing and critical thinking instructors guide them through standardized test prep and instruction in how to write, think, and articulate themselves better. In the afternoons, the mentors arrive for two hours of mentoring, bonding, "what’s going on in the world" discussions, the "great debate" series, planning of classes and extracurricular activities, summer program and financial aid applications, college preparation, and other enrichment, college readiness, and mentoring activities. Over the summers, mentees attend academic, cultural, or leadership programs throughout the United States and the world, all funded by Minds Matter.

We will be serving students for the 2023-2024 school year in-person to prioritize student and volunteer safety and comfort.
