Moving From Social Isolation to Social Connectedness

ORGANIZATION: TWIN CITIES COHOUSING NETWORK

  • 1 person is interested

We need a volunteer to help us organize quarterly potluck events. We have meetings about once per month in the evenings for about 2 hours. During those meetings you would help to plan our gathering, including discussing who will talk, what the topic will be, and how to publicize it. It would be great if you had writing skills and could help to write up the flyer for our newsletter, facebook page, and so on. We need you to attend each of the 4 gatherings to help set up the physical space, participate in the gathering, and help with clean up after. The position can expand as we become familiar with your skills.

Mission Statement

Twin Cites Cohousing Network works to create housing that moves people from pervasive social isolation to social connectedness and the vision of a front porch community and the vibrancy of a village in which people know, value, and share time, energy, and meals with their neighbors. Cohousing has been shown to help people feel more connected to their neighbors. volunteer more, and have a higher happiness index. And also to be more energy efficient, producing a smaller carbon footprint.

Description

Twin Cites Cohousing Network (TCCN) began when we brought in nationally recognized speaker Charles (Chuck) Durrett to talk about the ideas of cohousing presented in his book "Creating Cohousing; Building Sustainable Communities" in 2016. The Intro to the book is written by the Environmentalist Bill McKibben, the founder of the group 350.org.
"In 2015 the Meals on Wheels Program drove over 8 million miles to deliver meals to those who needed it. Not one of those miles were to a cohousing community. That is because when someone is in need in one of our communities, it is that person's neighbors who look after them."

Potluck gatherings are done 4 times per year to simulate the shared meals that are part of life in the Common House that is a center piece of each cohousing community. We attempt to link like minded people together to form what is called a "core group", a group that works to actually build a cohousing community. To this point, we have three such groups that we are supporting.
With all this in mind, our further goal is to help create 10 cohousing communities in the next 10 years. Ten communities that help people reconnect with their neighbors. Ten communities that use less fossil fuels and have a smaller carbon footprint.
