Since 1976, Albemarle Housing Improvement Program (AHIP)has been the only year-round home repair nonprofit completing emergency repairs, rehabs, and energy retrofits for neighbors in need in Charlottesville and Albemarle.

In the past year, AHIP helped 303 people in 134 households stay safe in their homes by performing 264 critical repairs and life-changing upgrades. We seek to eliminate health and safety deficiencies by shoring up the basic elements of safe and stable homes: roofs, water lines, insulation, handicap access, gutters, floors, energy-efficient systems, and dozens of other home repairs. The work we do helps to ensure the safety and security of vulnerable individuals and families, improves homes, preserves assets, revitalizes neighborhoods, and protects the affordable housing stock.

Volunteers are integral to AHIP's work, completing essential repair tasks, helping us stretch donor dollars further, and actualizing the ideal of community by connecting neighbors to each other and local businesses and organizations to the neighborhoods they are a part of and aim to serve.

Typical volunteer projects include building wheelchair ramps, repairing decks and steps, flooring, interior and exterior painting, construction site clean-up, and light landscaping (no experience necessary). Projects take place year-round (except for holidays) Monday through Friday 9am - noon and/or 12:30pm - 3:30pm.

Mission Statement

AHIP believes that everyone should be safe at home. Since 1976, greater Charlottesville’s home repair nonprofit has helped our neighbors in need with critical repairs and rehabs--keeping their homes safe, healthy, and affordable. Last year, AHIP and our supporters helped 324 people stay safe at home.

Description

AHIP was born out of recovery efforts after Hurricane Camille devastated southern Albemarle and Nelson counties in 1969. A group of UVA students and faculty who called themselves SCRUB went out to help clean up after the hurricane and discovered families living in dire housing conditions. Since becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1976, AHIP has grown into an award-winning community resource helping very low-income residents in the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County in need of critical home repairs. Volunteers have remained integral to AHIP’s work, connecting neighbors to each other, getting essential rehab and repair tasks done, and helping us stretch donor dollars further or close funding gaps. The work we do improves homes, preserves assets, revitalizes neighborhoods, and protects the local affordable housing stock.
