One of our newest attractions, Snakes of Texas, has become a must see for everyone!

Displayed are several species of venomous and non-venomous native snakes in a safe environment.

Discover how snakes help gardeners by keeping rodents and other pests under control.

What would you be doing in this position?

You are monitoring guests to make sure they practice safe behavior in the Snake House. You are providing guests with basic information about the snakes and answering any questions they may have.

Why are you important?

Make sure guests do not tap on the glass as this can upset the snakes. If an angry snake strikes the glass, it can hurt itself. While the chances of a snake getting loose is very, very, VERY low, we still do have venomous snakes and need to make sure guests are not engaging in behavior that is risky to themselves or to the snakes. Many people are scared of snakes! A smiling face telling them how awesome they are can go a long way in turning fear to fascination!

This job is a good fit if you...

  • Actually like snakes! We want to give guests a positive perspective on our slithery friends.
  • Are knowledgeable (or willing to learn) about snakes. If you know the difference between poisonous and venomous, you're on the right track! We will provide training and always have a "Snake Facts" sheet in the Snake House for quick reference.
  • Are comfortable with less than perfect A/C and heat. The snake house has two fans, some A/C and heat, so it never gets hot or too cold, just maybe not quite as comfortable as indoor temperatures. There is a chair out there so you are welcome to sit or stand!

Mission Statement

Texas Discovery Gardens is where children and adults discover and learn to sustain the natural world. Our vision is to provide a safe and natural oasis to our Dallas community. We want every visitor to leave with the knowledge and desire to emulate our sustainable practices at home!

Description

Texas Discovery Gardens is a 501(c)(3) organization. Our 7.5 acre organic garden features native and adapted plants. Inside, our two-story Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium transports you to a tropical rainforest, complete with hundreds of free-flying tropical butterflies!

Located in Dallas' historic Fair Park, Texas Discovery Gardens is a year-round organically maintained urban oasis filled with natural wonders. Family festivals, workshops, free admission days, and our extensive (and growing) EarthKeepers(r) student education program introduce children and adults to natural outdoor learning experiences.

We are the first public garden in the state of Texas to be certified 100% organic by the Texas Organic Research Center. The gardens are maintained using sustainable methods that conserve water and help to protect the environment.
