Come lend a hand at Community Research Forest, one of the last large remnant oak woodlands in the county! This property is the first joint land preservation project between The Land Conservancy (a nonprofit) and the McHenry County Conservation District (a government agency).
A private landowner donated an easement on 40 acres of woods to TLC, and the value was matched with a grant to help purchase the adjacent 53 acres of oaks. The 93 acres are managed jointly, and serve as a living laboratory to help landowners understand the challenges and opportunities of owning oak woods.
Volunteers are needed to remove invasive species that prohibit the growth of native trees and plants. All year long we cut brush such as buckthorn, honeysuckle, and small willows with chainsaws and hand loppers. Volunteers can cut or help build and burn brush piles.
No experience is necessary, so if you love being outside, come join our team of friendly volunteers! Tools and light refreshments are provided. Please dress in long pants, sturdy shoes and old clothing for working near a burn pile.
Workdays at Community Research Forest take place the last Saturday of each month. Park off of Lembcke Rd.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to preserve scenic, natural and agricultural resources in McHenry County by working with private landowners, communities and developers.
Description
Since 1991, The Land Conservancy has helped protect over 2,500 acres of McHenry County's prairies, wetlands and woodlands by working with private landowners, communities and other partners. We do this by accepting donated conservation easements and direct acquisition of property (through purchase or donation).
TLC has programs to help preserve land, agricultural land, conserve oak trees and actively restore the properties we own.
We also hold a number of events throughout the year that are opportunities for people to learn about the work TLC does, get involved with TLC, develop new skills and support land preservation in McHenry County.
Events include the Art of the Land fundraiser, Annual Celebration Brunch, our annual rain barrel and composter sale, and our spring and fall native plant sales.
TLC also hosts several restoration workdays throughout the month. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, and no experience is needed to participate. We will train people on basic land restoration techniques that include removal of invasive brush, garlic mustard control and native seed collection.
