Volunteer; 10 hours/week minimum

30hrs/week maximum

Primary Responsibilities

Focus on K-12 and community outreach with an emphasis on marine mammal science.

Essential Functions

  • Travel to schools and other youth organizations in San Diego to give presentations and host workshops that teach about ongoing NMMF Research
  • Keep outreach supplies clean and organized between events
  • Attend local STEM events and set up table/booth with NMMF outreach supplies
  • Seek/write educational grants for future funding
  • Attend weekly outreach meetings with CORE group
  • Help create new content for outreach programs including workshop activities and worksheets, giveaways, and presentations
  • Network and find new organizations to collaborate with for educational outreach
  • Update NMMF outreach calendar with upcoming events
  • Send out invitations to event participants and to internal NMMF volunteers
  • Coordinate pre-event meetings with NMMF volunteers
  • Act as the main POC for incoming outreach questions
  • Keep log of outreach events and attendance metrics
  • Anticipate and prepare for upcoming events
  • Manage Eventbrite account
Additional Requirements
  • A qualified candidate should be organized, proactive, and very passionate about inspiring students to learn about NMMF research and STEM topics as a whole. We are also looking for someone who is creative and can help us develop new programs.
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Must be able to work some evenings and weekends

Core Competencies

Ability to speak comfortably with audiences of all ages; Proficient with Microsoft powerpoint and Excel; Familiarity with national science education standards; Grant writing experience

Educational Requirements

Bachelor's degree preferred; Formal or informal science education experience is preferred, including teaching STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, And Math) topics.

Years of Experience

1 year - Experience working as part of a non-profit organization preferred
