Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Bay Area Girls Rock Camp!

Our Girls Rock After School Program (GRASP) serves self-identified girls, trans, and/or gender non-conforming youth ages 8-18 with instrument lessons, band practice, and music/empowerment workshops.

We are looking for self-identified women, trans and/or gender non-conforming adults ages 19+ to be Assistant Instrument Instructors (vocals, drums, bass, guitar, or keyboard). Assistant Instrument Instructors help teach the class of 2-8 youth with the Lead Instrument Instructor, who is responsible for making the curriculum. Classes aim to give youth skills they can put to use right away and account for different learning styles, needs and interests of the youth. We provide all instruments.

We hope for our youth to see themselves reflected in their mentors in this program. We prioritize people that are often not recognized as leaders or musical authorities to be those very things at GRASP. That is the reasoning behind gender-based mentorship in our program.

There is a mandatory training on Sunday, January 6, 12-5:30pm. We need Assistant Instrument Instructors on Tuesdays, January 8 through March 12, 3:45-5pm and/or 5-6:15pm. We provide coffee and snacks. There is an optional end-of-program showcase where youth perform their original songs to adoring fans in the afternoon of Saturday, March 16.

Interested? Questions? Feel free to email pei@bayareagirlsrockcamp.org or call 510-267-1808. We look forward to hearing from you!

Mission Statement

Bay Area Girls Rock Camp is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers young people through music, promoting an environment that fosters self-confidence, creativity and teamwork. Although our camp centers the experiences of young women, we are committed to gender justice and creating an inclusive environment that supports a wide range of marginalized gender identities and expressions. BAGRC challenges gender stereotypes, encourages collaboration and tolerance among peers, and provides a comfortable space for people of all backgrounds to express themselves. Through music lessons, workshops, group activities, and performances, rock campers acquire skills that help guide them throughout their lives.

Description

We exist to:

  • Build confidence in youth through music education
  • Provide youth with positive role models as they are discovering their own voice
  • Foster a space where youth support each other and feel free to express themselves without judgment and competition
  • Create a space where difference is celebrated and nurtured
  • Empower youth to recognize, understand and respond to discrimination
  • Create a world free of the myths that tell young people they can’t do or be something because of their gender
We value:
  • Building and sustaining an inclusive and diverse community
  • Providing services to youth regardless of their families’ ability to pay
  • Nurturing an intergenerational environment that brings together youth and adults
  • Encouraging self-discovery through hands-on experience and risk-taking
  • Striking a balance between technique and experimentation
We believe:
  • Music is a powerful tool for self-expression and empowerment
  • Music connects people across differences
  • Making music together inspires creativity, collaboration, communication and respect
