If you are interested in criminal and social justice reform, then this volunteer opportunity is for you! Gideon’s Promise envisions a nation where every person has access to zealous, outstanding representation necessary to ensure "equal justice for all" in the criminal justice arena. You will have an opportunity to meet and work with the Gideon’s Promise Community, which includes public defenders from across the country, our own staff, and nationally-recognized panelists in the field of indigent defense.
We need 10 volunteers each day to help with the following: at our registration table, set-up AV for sessions to ensure workshops begin on time, check to make sure all the materials are available and ready for each session, to breakdown training rooms and clear rooms after training and panel discussions, assist with directing participants to sessions, take attendance during sessions and assist with Survey Monkey evaluations.
Volunteers are needed in shifts of 4-5 hours each day:
- Friday 1/18/19 volunteers are needed during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- Saturday 1/19/19 volunteers are needed during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- Sunday 1/20/19 volunteers are needed during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
*All three days are not required to participate. Meals and parking will be provided by Gideon’s Promise. Every volunteer will be paired with a Gideon’s Promise staff member. There will be a 1-hour orientation provided at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday January 8, 2019 at 101 Marietta St. Atlanta, GA 30303, Suite 250 to learn more about us.PLEASE BE SURE TO SIGN UP PRIOR TO THE ORIENTATION! Mission Statement
Our mission is to transform the criminal justice system by building a movement of public defenders who provide equal justice for marginalized communities.
Description
WE ARE THE VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS In 1963, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in Gideon v. Wainright that state courts are required under the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to provide counsel in criminal cases to represent defendants who are unable to afford to pay their own attorneys. That same year, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom took place in our nation’s capitol. Both occurrences marked a monumental shift towards equality in the justice system and social infrastructure in our country.
Although 1963 was a pivotal year for civil and human rights, our jails and prisons are still populated with people who are not receiving quality representation due to financial, structural and cultural changes needed in the criminal justice system. Many people in the system are overwhelmingly poor and disproportionately minorities. For them, Gideon’s promise remains unfulfilled and justice out of reach.
Public defenders are necessary if we are to realize equal justice in America. We are the voice for the voiceless.
