Position Overview and Impact:

State of Arizona Research Library has the largest collection of Arizona newspapers in the state with multiple formats - print, microfilm and digital.

Newspapers are a rich and valuable resource for library patrons. Not only do they reflect the time in which they were created, but they provide a glimpse back into our communities. They allow researchers to see how people viewed an event when it happened, and trace the development over time. They help show how we celebrated, governed ourselves, faced conflict, and marveled at new technological advances. In short, they capture the everyday life of the people and places of Arizona.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Digitizing Newspapers: Scanning physical newspaper pages to create, label, and save digital images according to specific technical specifications.
  2. Production Assistant: Contribute to NDNP Documentary on the WW2 newspapers published at Fort Huachuca. Gather, organize, transport and set-up equipment and supplies needed to for video shoots. Download/upload, save, organize and label digital files. Small research projects as assigned.
  3. Metadata Collection for Newspaper reels.

Qualifications:

  • Intermediate computer skills: Use of external hard-drives, basic imaging, file types, file organization/sharing and keyboarding skills
  • Enthusiasm for learning new technical skills: scanning technology, digital file sharing, digital video
  • Careful attention to detail
  • Interest in Arizona History
  • Can stand for at least 2 hours at a time
  • Can lift and carry 20lbs
