ORGANIZATION: Refugee and Immigrant Self-Empowerment (RISE)

Refugee and Immigrant Self Empowerment (RISE) is a non-profit organization in Syracuse dedicated to empowering all refugees and immigrants through employment, education, and social support to allow them to attain self-sufficiency in America.

Below are some of the fields and opportunities available to volunteers and interns for involvement this Winter, Spring, and upcoming Summer Term at RISE, including:

  • Youth Education/Child Development: Help cultivate a safe and playful environment for refugee youth, Grades K-8, who participate in our After School or Saturday Academy Programs; foster students’ emotional, intellectual, and physical development through listening, tutoring/mentorship, and genuine engagement
  • Social Media Management (including photography, videography, multimedia storytelling): Heighten RISE’s visibility on all social media platforms to effectively communicate messages across diverse audiences
  • Career Services/Professionalization: Aid the empowerment, professional development, and education of refugee and immigrant youth & young adults, as they ready themselves for individualized college and/or career paths
  • Adult Education: Assist facilitators of RISE’s English as a Second Language classes, while promoting a shame-free environment for refugee & immigrant adults
  • Graphic Design : Collaborate with designers at RISE to update/maintain marketing and educational literature for the organization and its programs
  • Case Management: Lend a hand to RISE Case Managers as they provide assistance to refugees and immigrants navigating bureaucratic, social, and legal barriers in America

Requirements:

  • A commitment of 8/hrs per week for the duration of at least 4 months
  • An interest in issues that face refugees and immigrants
  • Effective cross-cultural communication skills and an ability to work professionally within a multicultural setting
  • Any critical language abilities is not a requirement, but is a plus!

The mission of Refugee and Immigrant Self- Empowerment (RISE) is to advocate and promote self-sufficiency through employment, education, social support and economic independence for members of the refugee and immigrant communities in Onondaga County, NY.

Description

RISE is committed to assisting the diverse refugee and immigrant communities in Onondaga County. Helping nearly 400 families from 25 nations annually, our programs are targeted at promoting self-sufficiency through employment, education, and economic empowerment. Whether it is helping our clients polish their resumes and prepare for a big job interview with our employment services, working with youth to help solve that tricky math problem in our after school and summer school youth programs, or providing the tools for adult learners to improve their English or to pass the US citizenship exam, we have the volunteer opportunity for you! Likewise, have a passion or interest? Share it with us! We are always on the lookout for new and unique programming.
