The Money Minders Program helps clients with monthly financial tasks so that they can continue to live independently. Help is provided in the least intrusive way possible in order to preserve client dignity and privacy, and there are program safeguards that protect the client’s money, the volunteer and the sponsoring agency.
Volunteers and the Money Minders Program Coordinator are partners in the delivery of Money Minders services to clients. A volunteer assists a client with some or all of the following tasks, depending on client needs:
- Read and sort mail;
- Prepare a basic monthly budget;
- Prepare BUT NOT SIGN checks to pay monthly bills;
- Record transactions in the check register;
- Reconcile the check register to a bank statement; and
- Communicate with vendors about billing issues.
Please note that volunteers do not exercise control over any client funds.
Experience and skills needed by the volunteers include the following:
- Previous experience managing their own household budget, bill-paying and bank account reconciliation;
- An understanding of the importance of maintaining client confidentiality;
- The ability to respect the client’s decisions about how they spend their money;
- The ability to avoid situations with a client that might create a conflict of interest;
- Basic record keeping skills: volunteers are required to submit client visitation forms and bank account reconciliation forms monthly; and
- Previous experience with banking, bookkeeping or assisting older relatives with bill paying is helpful but not required.
Money Minders Training: Thursday, March 12th from 1:00-4:00PM
