Do you love children? Are you interested in serving in Latin America for a year? NPH USA helps screen, place and support volunteers who serve for a year or more in 5 of the nine homes of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH): Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Bolivia, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. For the last 65 years Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos has provided a loving home to orphaned, abandoned and at-risk children. Children are not up for adoption, but live in a family environment where they receive love, education, health care, and life skills.
Volunteers must commit for a year, be at least 21 years old, have an intermediate-level of spoken Spanish and have a job on site during the day. Most volunteers work in education, administration, youth development, and health care. In addition to their job, volunteers spend time with a group of children each evening. Volunteers live in community with other international volunteers from around the world.
NPH does NOT require program fees before you leave home. Rather, we provide room and board, a modest stipend, and international health care while you are abroad, serving at one of our homes. Volunteers must pay for their flights to and from the countries where they serve.
All of our homes accept volunteers to begin in either July or January, and it is best to apply 6-9 months in advance of the start date. We have a July 1 deadline for January applications, and a January 1 deadline for July applications. We accept applications after those deadlines, but we like to receive them all by the same date if possible. Please apply even if the deadline has passed.
COVID-19 Protocol: The COVID-19 Pandemic has affected communities around the world, and the NPH family is no exception. Nonetheless, the NPH International Volunteer Program has never ceased to operate because we know that volunteers are an indispensable part of our mission. We continue to invite those around the world who are interested in dedicating a year abroad to NPH’s mission to join us-we need you now more than ever.
We have adapted the International Volunteer Program to a new normal under COVID-19, so as to ensure the safety of the children, youth, and families we care for and support, as well as to ensure the safety and well-being of the volunteers. The region where we work has been hit hard by the virus and its devastating social and economic consequences. Nonetheless, thanks to the diligent work of our health teams as well as the collaboration of all, we continue to ensure that NPH homes remain healthy and safe environments.
We ask that volunteers join us in ensuring that the NPH community continues to prosper despite the pandemic. This means following bio-security rules and protocols that were not necessary prior to the pandemic. Simple rules such as requiring that all adults wear face coverings while working have allowed us to keep the NPH family safe and healthy during the pandemic.
