Volunteers Needed!

The start of our 2018-2019 Emergency Winter Warming Shelter at AmeriCorps St. Louis is soon approaching, and we are rallying up our loyal volunteers to support our Shelter operations. We are excited to see both new and familiar faces volunteering at our Shelter this season!

Our Shelter will be open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays beginning December 1st of this year. As a reminder, our Shelter is only open when the temperature is at 20 degrees F or 25 degrees F with precipitation (i.e. snow, rain, sleet, etc.).

While volunteer roles will be delegated out upon arrival at the Shelter, a typical shift might include registering and signing in guests, escorting guests to cots, setting up and serving hot meals, and socializing with guests.

Please email Acstl.vista@gmail.com or call (314)772-9002 with any questions.

About AmeriCorps St. Louis

Location:

Mission Statement

The MISSION of AmeriCorps St. Louis is to enhance the professional skills and life-long ethic of the young men and women who serve; to respond to critical unmet needs in the areas of emergency response and environmental conservation; to leverage service of volunteers; and to build the capacity of our partnering agencies and communities we serve.

Description

AmeriCorps, if you are not familiar, is the domestic version of the Peace Corps. Since 1994, AmeriCorps St. Louis has attracted more than 1000 recent college graduates, from all over the country, who share a common desire to give back to their country. This September of 2016 begins AmeriCorps St. Louis’ 23rd year of service.

Our Members are trained as Emergency Responders and respond both locally and nationally to the wide variety of disasters that often turn people’s lives upside-down in a matter of minutes-from ice storms to hurricanes, and from tornados to flooding and forest fires. When not deployed on a disaster, Members provide conservation work for the State of Missouri.

In the winter of 2009, we added a third element to our organization. Partnering with Winter Outreach, we opened a Winter Warming Shelter at an urgent request of the City Department of Human Services to provide shelter for those in need when the temperature drops below 20 degrees. This shelter runs soley on donations and volunteers.
