VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Reading Buddies are paired with school age children during our one hour Reading Party to do shared reading. During shared reading, Reading Buddies may read between 1 and 4 books and engage in conversations that inspire creativity. Afterwards, children will select a book to take home with the help of their Reading Buddy.

Each Reading Party begins with circle time introductions and ends with our pajama presentation where each child receives a new pair of pajamas.

We ask that volunteers arrive to the Reading Center 10 minutes prior to their scheduled shift. At this time, a brief tour of the Reading Center is given and volunteers will be given information on what to expect during their shift. We do not allow volunteers to take pictures during the Reading Party. Children are not allowed to sit in a volunteer’s lap.

HOW TO APPLY

We invite volunteers (18 or older), who have completed our VOLUNTEER APPLICATION and passed our BACKGROUND CONSENT to share their love of reading with the children we serve throughout Metropolitan Atlanta. After completing the APPLICATION and BACKGROUND CONSENT, proceed to sign up for a shift on our VOLUNTEER CALENDAR.

Mission Statement

At Pajama Program, we promote a comforting bedtime routine for children affected by instability to help them thrive. At the Atlanta Reading Center, our programming focuses on shared reading between a child and an adult volunteer. The shared reading experience is aimed to give children a sense of comfort and belonging, so that they feel better prepared for a good night’s rest. We believe that every child has the right to a loving good night, complete with the comforting bedtime ritual of changing into new, clean pajamas and enjoying an enchanting story. Therefore, all of our Reading Center programming is complete with the magical gifts of new pajamas and storybooks to each child that attends a shared reading experience. The children who attend our programming are between the ages of 4 and 18 and visit us from local Community Partners including shelters, Pre-kindergarten/Head Start programs, group homes, Title I schools, and other child-serving organizations.

Description

Pajama Program is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2001 that believes that every child, no matter their circumstances, has the inherent right to a loving good night, complete with the comforting bedtime ritual of changing into new, clean pajamas and enjoying an enchanting story. Pajama Program offers at-risk children the unconditional, magical gifts of pajamas and books so that they can enjoy the greatest benefit of a loving bedtime and peaceful good night: a fulfilling good day. After all, good nights are good days.
