Groundhog Run benefiting the children of Ability KC has raised more than $4.75 million for children with special needs since its inception in 1982. In January of 2018, nearly 4,000 runners filled the 100% underground tunnels of Hunt Midwest SubTropolis to support the children of Ability KC.
In 2019, Ability KC is looking for 200 volunteers to help host the generous runners of Kansas City. Volunteer opportunities run from Friday January 25th throughout race day on January 27th.
Opportunities include:
Friday January 25th Packet Pick-Up
- Pass out race packets, t-shirts, and merchandise to runners @ KC Running Company in Leawood, KS
- 9:45 am - 1:00 pm
- 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
- 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Saturday January 26th Packet Pick-Up
- Pass out race packets, t-shirts, and merchandise to runners
- Location TBA
- 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
- 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Race Day Packet Pick-Up
- Distribute bib numbers, chips, and event t-shirts to registered runners @ Hunt Midwest SubTropolis
- 7:00 am - 12:00 pm
Race Day Water Station
- Fill water cups along race route and hand to participants during the 5k and 10k
- Volunteers are required to be on the course throughout the morning, and are advised to bring a folding chair
- 7:00 am - 12:00 pm
Race Day Course Monitor
- Cheer on the runners along the course, watch for runners in distress that need assistance. Call for assistance if necessary.

Race Day Volunteer Check-In
- Check-in volunteers on race day and hand out volunteer t-shirts

Race Day Start/Finish Line
- Hold signs to line up runners before the 5k and 10k, assist runners in removing timing chips, hand out 5k and 10k finisher medals

Race Day Gear Check
- Assist runners with the checking in and checking out of their gear for the 5k and 10k
- 7:00 am - 12:00 pm
Race Day Food Station
- Hand runners granola bars, fruit, chocolate milk, etc. after the 5k and 10k

Description
Ability KC is built on a strong founding legacy that continues to inspire the work done each day for children, adults and families with disabilities.
In 1947, Mary Shaw Branton, Jeanette Luhnow and Jane Dick founded the therapeutic preschool for children with special needs. At the same time, Vivian Shepherd worked to provide outpatient medical rehabilitation and employment services for veterans returning home from World War II.
In 2016, our founding organizations, Children’s Therapeutic Learning Center and Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City, came together as Ability KC. As one organization we are uniquely positioned to provide a continuum of care for individuals with disabilities at every stage of life.
Today, Ability KC serves more than 3,000 individuals and families with disabilities.
