Seattle In-Home Tutoring
Volunteer tutors are matched with refugee youth ...

CRB’s Youth Program in Kent supports newly arrived refugee youth, many of whom have lived in the United States for fewer than three years, who are in need of additional academic assistance outside of the classroom. The In-Home Tutoring Project aims to identify school-aged refugee youth struggling with their coursework, and match them with mentors who can help them achieve their educational goals and strengthen study habits, and soft skills.

POSITION SUMMARY: In-Home/ Public Library Mentors will provide individualized guidance in connection to school based knowledge, technology assistance, and English language practice that is geared towards school-aged refugee youth in the greater Seattle area. Tutoring sessions will focus on building students’ academic skills and providing opportunities to build proficiency in English. In-Home Mentors may need to prepare short exercises to target specific academic skills (resources and materials will be provided by CRB). Mentors and students will meet at least once a week at the student’s home or local public library. Each tutoring session will consist of a minimum of two hours of instruction per week, but the specific schedule will be determined by the Mentor and the student’s family. In-Home Mentors will be expected to make at least a 6 month commitment.

BENEFITS: Gain valuable experience working with refugee and immigrant youth. Professional development and training opportunities. Positively impact the life of a young person. When requested, there is also the opportunity to earn Service Learning Credits.

Mission Statement

Communities of Rooted Brilliance (CRB) partners with newcomer communities and helps them thrive through educational opportunities and social support services, while also honoring their traditional customs..

Description

We began in 2009, then known as the Coalition for Refugees from Burma. Our work at that time centered around helping refugees from Burma survive the trauma of resettlement from a jungle war zone or detention camp to an extremely dissimilar urban culture.

Over time, we found that our work was deeply needed within many newcomer communities, so our mission adapted and we changed our name to Communities of Rooted Brilliance to better reflect our partnerships.

CRB helps newcomer communities heal, grow, and thrive through our early learning, youth engagement, and family support programs. Our work is centered around three foundational concepts.

  1. The families we serve are partners in our work, and we continually seek out their knowledge and wisdom on the services we offer.
  2. Our programs are always education-based because we believe that education is the way to a healthier and happier future.
  3. We honor and recognize that dedicated leadership exists within each community, and we partner with these leaders to serve their communities in culturally responsive ways.

Since 2009, we have proudly partnered with about 500 South King County residents annually. Today, we continue to provide programming to engage the whole family, from pre-kindergarten to adulthood.
