Thinking about becoming a teacher? Preparing for a job as an instructional assistant? Volunteer with us!

Seattle Public Schools is recruiting classroom and school support volunteers. Consider one of our current opportunities to gain experience working with K-8 students. Whether you are on the educator path already or want to pursue it in a few years, classroom experience will help you determine your strengths, understand the demands and rewards of teaching, and get career advice from experienced educators.

Volunteering at SPS can lead to a career!

Seattle Public Schools has many opportunities for people without a teaching certificate - our greatest need is for English Language Learner and Special Education Instructional Assistants. Volunteering is an opportunity to learn about different education and career paths, including those offered by SPS!

At SPS, while your work as a pare-educator or instructional assistant, you can take classes toward earning a teaching certificate. Once done, you are hired by SPS as teachers with a starting salary of $56,000+.

Seattle Public Schools represents students from 154 countries of origin, with 33.9% students eligible for free and reduced-priced meals and 5.4% experiencing homelessness. Description

Our volunteer recruitment focuses on closing opportunity gaps at schools who serve the highest percentages of low-income students (70-90%). Volunteer need here is immense - as is the opportunity for your service to make the greatest impact.

What causes achievement gaps in Seattle schools?

Achievement gaps have many compounding causes. One consistent trend is that schools that serve high percentages of students living in poverty (so-called "Title I" schools), tend to have larger achievement gaps. Academic goals are meant to be challenging for most kids - they are so much harder to reach for children who:

  • live in poverty,
  • are homeless or lack stable housing,
  • live in foster homes,
  • experience food insecurity regularly,
  • lack of access to after-school academic supports.

Volunteers play an important role in creating excellent educational experiences and outcomes. Through volunteer service, you can change the trajectory of a student or a whole classroom and raise the achievement of all students:
- support students working to achieve academic goals through tutoring or mentoring,
- give educators more time for instruction and individualized student support by helping with classroom organization or clerical work,
- get involved in school-based services like food, clothing and backpack donations to help students focus on their academics.
