POSITION TITLE: Earth Day Volunteer

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Earth Day is a big day for us and we need our volunteers to help make it a success! Over 4,000 guests will visit the Greenway on Earth Day and we need all hands on deck. Groups are welcome! The event runs from 11AM-3PM with volunteer shifts starting at 10:45am

VOLUNTEER POSITIONS:

CAMP AREA FIRE WATCHERS/S’MORE KITS: Assist summer camp staff with assembling, selling and roasting s’mores kits! These volunteers will also help tend to the bonfire pits while guests enjoy. (2 each shift)

COTTON CANDY ASSISTANT: Support the cotton candy maker as she creates beautiful sugar clouds for guests to enjoy!

PARKING ATTENDANT: Help us greet our guests and be the face of the Greenway as folks come in to Earth Day! Parking attendants will help direct cars to utilize the space in our parking areas. (7 each shift)

CREEK CROSSERS: One of the most interesting volunteer positions on Earth Day. You will need some waders (which we can provide, let us know!) or water shoes of your choice. We will have wagon rides coming down to the creek. This is a popular activity for families, but crossing the swinging bridge with a stroller can be difficult. You'll be there to help families across by carrying the stroller (not their child!) across the creek for them. You will also help ensure the safety of the children who play in the creek (no rock throwing, that kind of thing!) (2 each shift)

LEAD-LINE HORSE RIDES: One of the most popular activities we have at Earth Day! Help young children ride a horse for the first time or the hundredth. Volunteers will assist by leading horses, walking alongside children on horseback and by helping put helmets on children. (10 each shift)

CLICKER COUNTER: Help the Greenway count an accurate amount of event guests by using the handheld "clicker counter". This volunteer position is flexible in location but it works best to stay at the entrance or along the event trail. (2 each shift)

VOLUNTEER CHECK IN/COORDINATOR ASSISTANT: Two volunteers will assist volunteers as they arrive and check in. All volunteers will receive a volunteer lanyard and shirt if they have not yet received one. This position will be available to help the Greenway Volunteer Coordinator with any tasks she needs, including delivering food/water to Earth Day volunteers. (2 each shift)

EDUCATION INFO BOOTH: Provide information for guests as they stop by the table. You do not have to be a Greenway expert for this position, but you must have general knowledge on the Greenway. Printed materials and giveaways provided! (2 each shift)

WATER BOTTLE REFILL/RECYCLING STATION: Help educate the public on the importance of recycling and what to recycle. We will provide guides to lead your conversations. Help promote using water stations and how to use them. (1 at each location)

SURVEYS: Ask guests to answer a short survey that will help improve their experience. After they take a survey, we will have giveaways for you to pass out! (2 each shift)

Description

Leroy Springs & Company has been providing recreational and educational opportunities to the communities surrounding Springs Industries facilities for over 60 years. In 1995, the Anne Springs Close Greenway, a 2,100 acre nature preserve in Fort Mill, South Carolina, was dedicated to the public to serve as a natural buffer from urban development and a place for countless activities - from hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, to picnics, kayaking and more.

The land was donated by the children of Anne Springs Close to honor her lifelong commitment to recreation and the environment. The Greenway is a not-for-profit entity which receives no ongoing tax dollars to build, maintain or operate its programs, trails and facilities. Owned and managed by Leroy Springs & Company, the Greenway is funded in part by memberships, program fees and generous donations from individuals and corporations.
