The Making a Connection Academy (MAC Academy) program seeks compassionate, wise, and experienced individuals to act as mentors for our students, at-risk refugee youth ages 16-21. MAC students are enrolled in English and employment preparation classes at the Office of Adult & Career Education Services, a division of the Rochester City School District. The MAC program provides additional support through educational field trips, opportunities to connect with the Rochester community and all that it has to offer, and life-skills support. This volunteer opportunity will link mentors with students to assist in case-management. Mentors will provide emotional and logistical support and advice for our students for everyday matters such as financial and health literacy, and will assist with conversational English and the transition to American culture.

Description
MAC was established in 2014 as a pilot program under the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to provide employment and educational opportunities for recently arrived refugees in Rochester. After four successful years of creating community partnerships and educational opportunities and delivering demonstrated results, MAC now expands its mission to include young adults 16-25.
Since its inception in 2014, the MAC Academy has served over 200 refugee students in Rochester. We assist with employment preparation and job searches, English classes, High School Equivalency classes, financial and health literacy, driving lessons, volunteer opportunities, educational field trips in the Rochester area and to Washington, D.C., and building a community network.
