With up to 300 kids coming to visit FCMoD daily during the spring school semester, we focus on our school field trip services. We seek enthusiastic and dependable volunteers who can welcome a school group and their chaperones, briefly orient groups to the museum, navigate the group through their museum itinerary, and help them have a positive museum experience.
School Group Host shifts are approximately 3 hours and happen between 8:30am and 1pm. Ideally volunteers would do one shift per week, coordinated with the museum programs staff to ensure there will be hosts for all school groups scheduled.
-Greeting and orientating the group,
-Answering general questions and helping with wayfinding,
-Gallery hosting while the group is on the exhibit floor,
-Running the group digital dome theater shows, if scheduled.
-Assisting with learning labs, as desired and if scheduled.
All training is provided.
Group Hosts serve a critical role in museum guest services by welcoming, engaging, and assisting groups of students, their teachers and chaperones when they arrive at the museum and in the gallery.. As a Group Host you will watch for groups to arrive so that they can be greeted outside as soon as they pull up. You will introduce yourself to the group and provide a brief orientation to the group so they know the expectations at FCMoD. When leading them into the museum, you will ensure they know where to find the restrooms, Learning Labs, OtterBox Digital Dome Theater, and main gallery. If the group has scheduled a dome show, you may be asked to operate the theater and show their film for them. If the group has scheduled a learning lab, you may be asked if you’d like to assist the lead museum educator with the facilitation of the class. After groups have been greeted, you will spend time in the museum as the group's host and assist them through transitions in their schedule.
Training is provided for Group Hosts and Digital Dome operation, but it is essential to possess some particular skills. A successful Group Host is amiable, enthusiastic, and comfortable speaking in front of large groups of school groups of all ages. Hosts are expected to be positive, flexible problem-solvers, solution-oriented, and willing to help out with the group, as needed. It is essential that you be prompt and dependable for your shift. Previous experience working with school groups, children, customer service experience and/or experience assisting with public events, organization outreach, or previous volunteering is helpful.
On-the-job training is mandatory for School Group Hosts. After interviews are conducted, and it is determined that you and School Group Hosting are a good fit, you will shadow an experienced host for a couple times until you are comfortable guiding a group on your own.
