We have the students. YOU have the knowledge. Help us foster the next generation of STEM innovators!
Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL) is proud to present the Epic STEM Challenge. Middle school students at Belmar, Columbine, Golden, and Standley Lake Libraries will dive into the world of science, technology, engineering and math and compete individually or in teams - with the help of college mentors - by developing STEM projects designed to change the world. Winners of the Challenge will receive a $500 check toward their middle school or home school organization. Projects will fall into one of four tracks:
- Engineering & Environment
- Health & Nutrition
- Coding & Robotics
- Biomedicine
This is where YOU come in. JCPL is recruiting 80 Mentors for the Challenge. Can you help us out?
Mentors
Mentors are college and university students studying in the STEM fields. Each mentor will receive a $50 stipend and a T-shirt. They will guide up to 5 middle schoolers during a series of meetups at one of the four library locations:
Meetup 1: What’s the Plan?
Saturday, December 1 - at Belmar, Golden & Standley Lake Libraries
Sunday, December 2 at Columbine Library
Mentors will help students brainstorm and finalize their topics, develop thesis statements, and refine their projects’ scopes.
Meetup 2: Clearing Roadblocks
Saturday, January 12
Mentors will guide students in tackling any problems that have cropped up during the prep time.
Meetup 3: Final Polish
Saturday, January 26
Mentors will help students tweak and polish their demonstrations and explanations and rehearse for judging.
Mentors will also be invited to attend the Epic STEM Competition on Saturday, February 2 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds as well as the Epic STEM Awards Ceremony on Saturday, February 9 at Red Rocks Community College's Arvada Campus. Attendance will be optional at the competition and awards ceremony.
