Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12th grade classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects based on the theme of the author's book.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.

This field trip needs your help at a school in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NYC. To sign up, reply with the program code to volunteer@behindthebook.org. We'll supply the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

Volunteer Role: Field trip chaperone

About the program: Third-graders are learning about architectural features near their school and in the world with Isabel Hill's "Urban Animals," a picture book about building details that portray animals. They'll design their own buildings, then work with writing coaches to edit drafts incorporating their new architecture-related vocabulary. Field trip chaperones will accompany the class on a visit to the Skyscraper Museum. *You can also sign up to be a walking tour chaperone on Tuesday, November 27th from 9:00 - 10:30 AM to guide students as they photograph architectural details during a tour of the neighborhood.
