ORGANIZATION: Families in Transition

General Description: Families in Transition is seeking an organized and committed volunteer/intern to assist with the Annual Point in Time Count of the homeless in Manchester, NH. Each year, the City of Manchester engages in a one day count of all of the homeless residing within the city. The count consists of two components: The "unsheltered" component includes a count of people residing in streets or other places not meant for human habitation; The "sheltered" count includes a count of people residing in emergency shelters and transitional housing programs. FIT is in need of a person to lead all components of the 2019 count which will occur during the last days of January 2019. The position will require a commitment of approximately 5-10 hours per week from December 3 rd through late February (exact end date flexible). The Annual Point in Time count is essential in helping the City to determine trends in homelessness within the city.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Attend and help schedule Point-in-Time Count meetings

Leads Point-in-Time night count, including, but not limited to, the following activities:

  • Reading federal guidelines and best practices regarding Point-in-Time count methodology
  • Assist with any changes to methodology
  • Recruiting volunteers for night count
  • Ensuring all necessary materials are prepared and ready on night of count (sign-in sheets, tally sheets, phone contacts, pencils, maps, food, etc.)
  • Attending the count and acting as the key contact person for volunteers (2 - 6 am on Wednesday, January 23 rd, 2019)

Supports the remainder of the Point-in-Time with the following specific activities:

  • Update contact list
  • Update instructional documents
  • Send reminder emails to agencies submitting data
  • Follow-up with contacts after count to obtain any missing surveys
  • Follow-up with contacts after count to clarify any ambiguous or missing data

Other potential activities based on skill/interest

  • Help update survey tool used for count
  • Help compile data
  • Help with Point-in-Time count training materials
  • Prepare volunteer and training attendee feedback surveys
  • Compile results of those surveys

Volunteering within the agency is a great opportunity to really see our mission at work and to connect with our staff and participants. Some of these volunteer opportunities include shifts at the food pantry, serving a meal at the shelter, sorting donations at Outfitters, helping with building maintenance, and supporting our staff with various administrative projects. We have opportunities for both individuals and groups as well as on-going and one-time projects.
