Board Position Available: Secretary of the Board
Coalition for Refugees from Burma (CRB) promotes the self-sufficiency of refugees and immigrants by helping them access services and educational opportunities, while preserving traditional customs.
CRB offers safe community spaces for the diverse, multi-ethnic communities from Burma, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Bolivia, Eritrea, and Bhutan living in King County, WA. CRB’s programs are designed to reach across linguistic, religious and cultural barriers to foster a community that can learn from and grow with one another. Since 2009, CRB has served refugees and immigrants living in South King County, by providing educational opportunities to engage the whole family, from pre-Kindergarten to adulthood. The communities we serve are low-income, traditionally underserved, and from a region where students and families have limited access to educational opportunities to develop confidence and skills for self-sufficiency. We seek to transform refugees to become advocates of our community, and to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate humanitarian and social support services to improve the living conditions and quality of life for resettled refugees.
We believe that we must intentionally address community needs while incorporating community voices in the design and implementation of our programs. Based on a framework of social-justice, rather than social-service, and strengths rather than deficits, we aim to create a model of community driven systems change that engages all stakeholders (youth, families, communities, schools, service providers, government, etc.) in a coordinated manner to collectively dismantle inequities.
- Knowledge of meeting procedures, decision-making rules, governance policies, and the bylaws of CRB.
- Proficiency in written expression, and attention to detail.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Serve on the Board of Directors of CRB
- Manage the general communication of the board of directors, including notice of board and/or committee meetings, and distributing agendas, board packets, resources, etc.
- In partnership with the Board president and executive director, prepare board packets, including agendas and any required documents for the board meetings.
- Schedule conference calls and prepare necessary communication equipment i.e. computers, conference call devices.
- Record and submit minutes of board meetings to all board members for review and approval.
- Update the organization’s bylaws, maintain articles of incorporation, keep accurate and up-to-date records of board members, board minutes, financial reports and other important documents.
- Manage board documents and resources in shared drive for board member access.
- Assume responsibilities of the chair in the absence of the board chair and vice chair.
- Participate in trainings, workshops, webinars to stay current with best practices of non-profit boards.
Board Expectations & Responsibilities
Serving on the board of CRB is an opportunity to be a champion of community efforts to support education equity. To be successful in the role of board member, individuals will:
1. Provide organizational leadership and direction by being a visionary, developing and evaluating long-range goals and strategies to ensure we collectively advance CRB’s mission.
2. Stay well informed about the organization by attending and actively participating in Board meetings, reviewing important documents and financial statements, and understand the legal, fiscal, and ethical responsibilities of the board. Be aware of and notice community activities and legal/political developments with may impact the organization and/or programs and bring them to the attention of the Board. Be familiar with the bylaws.
3. Oversee CRB’s financials, including adoption and management of annual operating budget.
4. Develop volunteer leadership, assisting in the recruiting and orientation of new qualified board members.
5. Serve as a CRB ambassador at major programs and events.
6. Make personally meaningful financial contribution to CRB.
7. Support the financial sustainability of CRB through assisting, developing and participating in fundraising strategies.
8. Ask questions and raise any concerns as they arise either in a group board discussion, or privately with the executive director or the board president.
9. Read and agree to the CRB’s conflict of interest policy.
Serve a minimum of three years (one term). Board members may serve up to three consecutive terms.
