1. Project Objective:
The intern will be asked to complete research on the CSS Neuse and life in Lenoir County during the Civil War. The intern will use this information in conjunction with other site resources to help develop two new STEM based adventure backpacks for families to utilize during their visit to the site. In addition, they will create one new program for a non-traditional audience that will be implemented in the 2019-2020 fiscal year. The intern will also be expected to help with visitor services and learn the history of the CSS Neuse and the basics of the Civil War in eastern North Carolina.
2. Major Tasks to be Performed:
The intern will be asked to research and develop one new or expand existing educational program to fit museum setting. Ideally this will utilize exhibit displays or text. In addition, they will be asked to assist site interpreters with group tours, demonstrations, and running the gift shop.
3. Final Product or Outcome Anticipated:
The intern will gain practical experience in research, developing educational programming and expanding the reach of a museum beyond walk in visitation. They will also learn how to effectively interact with the public in a museum setting. The educational program developed by the intern is expected to be complete and ready to implement during the 2019-2020 school year.

The intern will gain knowledge on how to research, develop, and promote effective programming to a variety of ages. They will also learn the importance of visitor services, cash management, and how to effectively engage the public.
2. List SPECIFIC job duties:
The intern will be expected to complete research, learn the history of the CSS Neuse and eastern North Carolina during the Civil War to provide visitor orientation, give tours, develop educational programming, and effectively promote the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center. They will also be asked to assist in processing admission and gift shop sales as visitor services.
3. Why is an intern NEEDED?
Due to increased visitation and limited staff the site needs assistance from interns and volunteers to help complete research and assist with educational programming. Previous interns have contributed greatly to expanding our educational footprint.
4. Describe how mid-summer and final evaluations will be conducted:
Upon arrival, the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center requires all interns to write a short paper stating their intent and what they hope to gain from their time at the site. Throughout the internship, they are required to fill out a time log with a short description of what they worked on each day. They are required to meet with their internship supervisor once a week to discuss progress. Upon completion, they are asked to write a short paper in response to a selection of questions to evaluate their experience and attend an exit interview with supervisor. If the internship is for school credit the evaluation and grade will be submitted.

- The internship will run from May 21-August 6.
- The site is open Tuesday-Saturday, 9-5.

Qualifications:
* Maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher
* Major in Education, History, Public History, Anthropology, Museum Studies, Business, Maritime Studies, or
* Be a junior or senior in college ‐ Applicants are responsible for transportation to and from the internship experience
* Hours are flexible and depend on the student’s class schedule, course requirements (if applicable) and availability.
* Hours Per Week: 20-40
* Wage/ Salary: Unpaid
Internship projects will vary depending the students' major. All interns will learn about visitor services including admissions, visitor orientation, gift shop management, and how to provide tours.

Description
The Gov. Caswell Memorial explores the celebrated life of Richard Caswell, the first elected governor of the independent state of North Carolina. At the CSS Neuse Interpretive Center, learn about the ironclad gunboat and watch as a new museum takes shape. The Confederate Navy launched the ill-fated CSS Neuse in an attempt to regain control of the lower Neuse River and the city of New Bern.
The CSS Neuse Interpretive Center is located at 100 N. Queen St., Kinston, N.C. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Gov. Caswell Center is located at 2612 W. Vernon Ave., Kinston, N.C., 27604. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. 4 p.m. The sites are closed Sunday and Monday, and most major holidays.
