ORGANIZATION: OPEN ARMS MINISTRY

Role: Monday Night Food Prep and Set-Up Support

Mission: Open Arms Drop-In provides basic relief services to individuals struggling with homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. More than relief from the weather outside, this drop-in program enables those who come to share a meal with friends and get connected to resources. Guests also receive help meeting physical needs like clothing, toiletries, and basic healthcare. Referrals are available for services such as overnight shelter, recovery, and education.

Objective: The Monday Night Prep Team undertakes preparatory activities that allow the week’s drop-in sessions to flow smoothly. The team’s activities will include preparing food in the kitchen, setting up and organizing the dining area and clothing distribution. This team’s contributions allow the Drop-In support to 'plug-and-play’ during` the next day’s session.

General responsibilities include:

  • Prepare ingredients for the meals such that the food can be cooked and served efficiently
  • Prepare meals for multiple days (i.e., Tuesday and Wednesday Drop-In sessions)
  • Organize and clean the kitchen; store food
  • Set-up and arrange dining area
  • Organize and set-up clothing distribution tables
  • Organize and set-up distribution for toiletries
  • Set-up coffee maker for operation in the morning
  • Other tasks as assigned

  • General operating knowledge of a kitchen
  • Organizational skills and an eye for detail

  • Monday Nights 6:30 - 8:30

Open Arms Ministry has two programs addressing homelessness, poverty, and food insecurity on the northwest side of Chicago.

DROP-IN

Open Arms Drop-In provides basic relief services to individuals struggling with homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. More than relief from the weather outside, this drop-in program enables those who come to share a meal with friends and get connected to resources.

Guests also receive help meeting physical needs like clothing, toiletries, and basic healthcare. Referrals are available for services such as overnight shelter, recovery, and education.

FOOD PANTRY

Working in conjunction with the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the Open Arms Food Pantry serves families and individuals who live in the area bounded by Irving Park, Fullerton, Pulaski, and Western.

All are welcome (proof of address required), including those who have experienced job loss, illness in the family, unexpected expenses, and more.
