Each February, the Franklin County Chapter of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers has a regional math competition for middle schoolers called "MathCounts" (see mathcounts.org). The winners go on to the State competition in March, and the winners of that competition go on to the National competition (shown on ESPN). Our regional competition is the largest in the state and for those of you who have never been to one of these competitions, I can only say that its really inspiring to see these 6-8 graders work so hard at these math problems. Some kids in middle school get praise for athletics or popularity, but this gives an opportunity for the kids to shine as "mathletes" in an exciting competitive atmosphere. We need graders and proctors (to hand out, monitor and time the tests).
