ORGANIZATION: Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital

Do you want to share your love of the outdoors with girls? Would you like to help girls to learn the skills they need to plan and organize a campout? Imagine teaching girls how to safely build a campfire, and then sittling alongside as they roast marshmallows to make S'mores! Girl Scout troops must have a Campout/Cookout Certified Volunteer in order to go camping, but not every troop has someone who has taken the training. You could be the volunteer troops need to camp at our property in Capon Bridge, WV.

Volunteers must have an annual membership for Girl Scouts Nation's Capital (including a background check), watch a prerequisite video, and attend an overnight Cookout & Campout class that trains volunteers how to lead a campout using the Girl Scout philosophy. You do not need any experience prior to the training; however, you must be committed to safety, excited to help girls build leadership skills, and ready to work in collaboration with girls and other adults. Girl Scout experience is a plus, but not required!

As the Campout/Cookout Certified Volunteer, you would be connected to troop leaders who would like to camp but aren't certified. Together with the troop leaders, you would coordinate the trip, including meeting with the troop ahead of time to help them prepare, and then attend the camping trip with the troop.

Mission Statement

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. We seek to accomplish this by providing girls opportunities to develop their potential and have fun with their peers in a supportive, all-girl setting.

Description

Founded in 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA is the preeminent organization for girls with a current membership of 3.6 million girls and adults. Volunteers use their expertise, skills, interests, and life experience to shape fun and enriching leadership experiences for girls, and inspire them to reach their personal best. Volunteers help council staff facilitate the New Girl Scout Leadership Experience to girls through exciting program opportunities: leadership/self-esteem, financial literacy, travel, health/wellness, science, technology, engineering, and math. Volunteers choose from several flexible Pathways (the ways that girls and adults join Girl Scouting) that fit their lifestyles, including short-term or long-term service working either directly or indirectly with girls, and they can participate regionally, nationally, and internationally.
