United Way's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) provides FREE tax preparation to individuals and families earning up to $56,000 annually. VITA taxpayers receive the maximum refund possible without paying hundreds of dollars in preparation costs.

The VITA program helps taxpayers access all of the tax credits for which they are eligible - including the Earned Income Tax Credit which has been recognized as the single most powerful tool to lift children out of poverty. For many of our taxpayers, their tax refund is the biggest check they'll receive all year. Claiming these credits puts taxpayers on the path to paying off debt, securing better housing, obtaining dependable transportation, or pursuing higher education. Their spending generates millions of dollars in economic impact for the community.

Last year, our VITA volunteers served more than 3,000 households and brought more than $4.2 million dollars back to our community. You can be a part of the team that makes this possible!

Don’t know that much about taxes? No experience is necessary to become an effective, impactful VITA volunteer. We provide all necessary training in the month of January. The software that we use makes the tax preparation experience a matter of a little know-how and careful data entry.

How much training will I need?

First-year tax preparers go through approximately 24 hours of training in the month of January before tax preparation begins in February. Once you are placed on a team, you will have volunteer mentors around you to ask questions, as well as other tax preparation volunteers. Every return you prepare will be reviewed by a fellow volunteer to provide a quality check before filing.
