Red Cross supplies about 40% of the nation's blood supply. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. Whether a patient receives whole blood, red cells, platelets or plasma, this lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation.

We are introducing a new Volunteer position for the Greater Salt Lake area where we need Volunteer Medical Screeners.

Purpose: Provide support to blood collection operation by performing regulated medical screening of potential blood donors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect and confirm donor demographics
  • Determine procedure eligibility
  • Conduct physical exam, to include oral temperature, pulse, BP and hematocrit by accepted process
  • Facilitate and evaluate health history (typically self-administered by donor)
  • Comply with applicable Federal, State and local regulations as well as all American Red Cross policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Attend relevant meetings, skill competency assessments, and updates
  • Be punctual and dependable for all assignments

Qualifications:

  • Willingness to support Red Cross Mission
  • Customer service experience, effective verbal communication, and public relations skills are required
  • Experience working in a regulated medical environment preferred. Medical Assistant, RN, LPN, or other medical experience strongly preferred
  • Must be able to follow Standard Operating Procedure instructions and training
  • Basic computer skills required
  • HS diploma or equivalent
  • Must be able to follow SOP instructions

Time Commitment:

  • 2 shifts per month after 148 hour orientation and training commitment.
  • Ongoing competency assessment and training as required

Training:

  • Virtual, classroom and on-the-job instruction. Classroom training is conducted during traditional business hours. Includes:
  • Orientation to the American Red Cross
  • 5 day Orientation to Biomedical Services and Self Paced Computer based Training
  • 54 hour ARC Health History Training
  • Up to 80 hours On the job instruction and training

Length of Appointment:

  • Minimum appointment of 9 months including training time. Competency assessment according to standard operating procedures.
