Saturdays are the busiest day for us - that's when most people come up to go hiking, when children have their birthday parties here, and when lots of groups come visit the museum! We only have one staff person assigned to work each Saturday so we sure could use the help of a friendly, outgoing person who would like more experience greeting guests!
Tasks include:
- learning what the museum has to offer, what the trails are like (so you can recommend them to folks looking for help), what kinds of animals we have, and what programs we offer
- greeting guests who step into the office/gift shop
- answering the phone
- ringing people out with gift shop purchases (this is super easy and generally we sell less than $30 of goods on a Saturday anyway - just small stuffed animals for kids!)
Extra stuff if you're interested in learning - not at all mandatory:
- animal care
- animal handling/interpretation - you could have an animal out to educate visitors, or assist with the birthday party animal shows
- basic troubleshooting for rentals - how to use the fireplace, where extra tables and chairs are, how to rig up a pinata in a pinch
Like meeting new people? Good, we like you already :)

Description
The mission of Tanglewood Nature Center is to lead and support education and preservation efforts in our region to achieve a heightened awareness, understanding, enjoyment, and caring for our natural environment.
We strive to fulfill our mission every day by: maintaining over ten miles of trails, offering educational programming for children and adults, providing homes in our exhibits for more than 40 native and exotic animals, and welcoming over 35,000 visitors a year.
Our hours are Tuesday through Friday (9am-4pm) and Saturday (10am-4pm). Most volunteering will need to be done during our regular hours.
WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS LIKE?
After you decide one of our projects sounds like a good fit for you, please fill out one of our volunteer applications - either on our website or pick up a paper copy at the office. Once that is received, we do a basic Sex Offender Registry check on all prospective volunteers, which can take several business days. Generally, within a week of getting the SOR cleared, the volunteer coordinator will email you to schedule a brief orientation/meeting with the volunteer coordinator to get you set up with your volunteer projects. After that, everything's easy!
