SKIP is a charity working with disadvantaged families in an impoverished district of the city of Trujillo, Peru. Our holistic program focuses on the educational, economic, emotional and social development of each child and family. It is our aim to foster the capacity of children and families to be the principal agents of change in their own lives.
Education Department
There are over 200 children between the ages of four and eighteen years old currently enrolled in the education programme, which makes it the largest department in SKIP. We aim to maintain an exciting, stimulating and engaging learning environment. Our aim is not to replace the local education system, but rather supplement it. Following a curriculum designed especially for the children at SKIP, we provide classes in subjects such as reading comprehension, Math and Computing.
The English teaching programme:
Our English Programme consists of between five and ten volunteers. We conduct lessons in classes at the SKIP centre, and also in local public schools.
We take a dynamic approach to teaching the children; lessons are creative, activity-based and interactive. There are lots of games and songs to keep the children engaged so they can enjoy learning in a fun environment. The English team works together with the Peruvian public school teachers to implement these teaching practices in the classroom.
The Library Programme:
Our Library functions as a library, drop-in centre, homework club and short-term child-care. What makes it so special is that it is voluntary. Kids turn up as and when they want to. It can be the difference between being at home alone looking after even younger siblings or having a safe fun place to do homework, read and engage in educational play. It is a place where our working parents know their children will be safe and supported every afternoon. It offers child-cares support for mothers who attend our educational or skills workshops at SKIP. The library is open to the 300+ primary and secondary children who access SKIP. Every day we see kids build their confidence in reading and writing and maths and it is incredibly rewarding.
The position:
The English Teaching and Library Coordinator is responsible for training and supervising the English teaching and library volunteers, observing lessons, providing feedback and motivating the team. They will be developing and revising the curriculum and liaising with the local public schools in El Porvenir. They will also support the Primary Education Programme by being responsible for the Library Programme. We arelooking for someone who can bring creative new ideas to both of these programs and get the children excited about reading and learning English!

Mission Statement
SKIP is a non-profit organization helping disadvantaged children to realize their right to an education. We work to promote quality education for economically-disadvantaged children in El Porvenir and foster the capacity of children and families to be the principal agents of change in their own lives. We work in partnership with families through holistic programs focusing on the educational, economic, emotional and social development of each child and family.
Description
Enrolling and retaining children in the education system is much more than a question of money. To ensure sustainable results, we address factors like family economy, emotional well-being, stability of home environment, nutrition, and academic skillset, all of which impact the chances of a child to enter and stay in school. Our holistic approach focusses on four pillars of family development:
Education
Economic development
Psychology
Social work
