What is the ELA program and who do we serve?
LBCC's English Language Acquisition (ELA) program serves students who want to improve their English language skills in order to work and/or attend school in the United States. This program is for permanent residents and the ELA student demographic consists primarily of immigrants and refugees.
How can I help?
Volunteers are most often needed to work with individual students or with small groups. There are also opportunities to assist in classrooms as in-class aide - this could mean working with a student with specific needs or as general classroom assistant. We also appreciate volunteer assistance during new student orientations and at events like graduation.
What kind of tutoring do students need or request?
- Conversation and pronunciation practice - students benefit from practicing what they've learned in class by speaking with a native English speaker.
- Vocabulary, grammar and writing practice
- Review of in-class concepts
- Practice for Naturalization interview and/or review of material from Citizenship classes
- Computer skills - Computer Basics is a required class for students enrolled in certain ELA programs. We often work with students who have low levels of computer literacy and need practice outside of class or assistance in completing online assignments
We have tutoring opportunities in Corvallis and Albany. Scheduling and location are flexible - tutors choose from a list of tutoring requests to find a student or classroom that best fits their scheduling preferences and familiarity and comfort with the material. Requests are based off of student availability. We receive requests for tutoring on evenings and weekends but tutoring is often in demand before and after class times between 11:30 and 1:00 and from 5:00-8:50.
- Winter term: January 6th-March 20th
- Spring term: March 30th-June 12th
- Summer term: TBD - details to come!
Successful tutors are encouraging, flexible, organized, empathetic, respectful, responsible, committed and learner-centered. Preferred (but not required) are a background in education/instruction, experience working with English Language learners or other relevant volunteer or work experience.
How do I volunteer and who do I contact for questions or more information?
All tutors must attend a new tutor orientation prior to being placed with a student or in a classroom.
Please contact the Adult Basic Skills Tutoring Coordinator, Cara White, at whitec@linnbenton.edu or at 541-917-4713. You may also use the following link to provide contact information and the Tutoring Coordinator will be in touch to schedule a time to meet: https://forms.gle/B3dnuyn39RjMCCVX9
