Position Summary:
Provides assistance with Reading Buddies, the Library’s reading enrichment program where read aloud to teen volunteers to improve their reading skills.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with set up and clean up of the program space as needed, under the direction of a library staff member
- Help manage teen volunteers, who will work directly with children
- Help manage the books used for Reading Buddies book collection
- Interact with children and their families during the program
- Read with or listen to children read aloud, to improve their reading and language abilities. Many of the children speak English as a second language.
- Monitor the time and make an announcement when the session is over
- Make sure children are with their parents
Skills Needed:
- Ability to provide friendly, patient service to children aged 5-11 and their families
- Able to interact with parents in a positive manner
- Understanding of how children develop reading skills
- Experience teaching is highly desirable
- Experience with English Language Leaners is highly desirable
Time Commitment:
The Reading Enrichment Assistant will need to commit to 2½ hours per week for a minimum of 6 months. He/she will need to assist Children’s Department staff member with Reading Buddies which is held on Tuesday afternoons from 3pm to 5:30 pm for the months of October, December, February, April and July.
Age Requirement:
Adult library volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
