The House Of Ruth Maryland leads the fight to end violence against women and their children by confronting the attitudes, behaviors and systems that perpetuate it, and by providing victims with the services necessary to rebuild their lives safely and free of fear.
Program & Position
B-More Bags are designed, sewed, and produced entirely by volunteers. We use donated designer fabrics and trims, jewelry and embellishments to create truly unique and functional tote bags, handbags, market bags, dressy bags, "stuff" bags, wine bottle bags, and more.
Our workshop, like sewing circles and quilting bees, is a place where people come together and share -- creativity, friendship and the joy of community service -- all in one small room.
100% of the proceeds from sales of B-More Bags go to support the House of Ruth Maryland's programs and services for victims of domestic violence.
Qualifications: We are in need of volunteers that are able to sew. We have limited opportunities for non-sewers (sorting fabric, cutting patterns, helping to keep the shop organized). This is a sewing group - but we are happy to teach less experienced sewers!
Time Commitment
Workshop sessions:
- One evening a week (usually a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) - 5-8pm
- Saturday sessions once a month - 11:30am-2:30pm

Mission Statement
The House of Ruth Maryland Leads the Fight to end violence against women and their children by confronting attitude, behaviors, and systems that perpetuate it, and by providing victims with the services they need to rebuild their lives safely and free of fear. Our vision is that one day, every woman in Maryland will be safe in her won home.
Description
The House of Ruth Maryland was founded in May of 1977 by a coalition of women's organizations, religious groups, service providers, and elected officials to provide a safeohaven for victims of domestic violence and their children. In November of 1977, we opened Baltimore's first crisis shelter for these victims in a row house on North Calvert Street. Today the House of Ruth Maryland is recognized as one of the nation's most comprehensive domestic violence center and has a staff of more than ninety.
