EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Family Literacy Fun Day is a free event for Cambridge families with a focus on literacy and parent/child activities. Families can enjoy many stations of literacy-based activities, a free performer, free lunch, and many exciting stations to visit!

WHAT WE'LL BE DOING: Volunteers will help at a variety of stations where families will visit to do an activity or play games. Volunteer stations will include math, science, building, crafts, bingo, assisting with serving lunch, books, games, face painting, assisting at the registration desk and performances, and more! Volunteers will be given the chance to choose a preferred station based on their interests. The Center for Families cannot run this event without volunteers and really appreciate your time and energy in helping to make this free event happen for Cambridge families. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: This is a big event - as 800 to 1,000 people from Cambridge attend. It is a busy but fun day! You will be interacting with children and their families. Many staff will be around to help you out throughout the event. Volunteers will be provided with a light breakfast snack and lunch. NOTE: This event is wheelchair accessible and is able to accommodate volunteers with disabilities. If you require any accommodations, please let the event manager know, so we can work with the nonprofit hosting the event to make necessary accommodations. Thank you! WHERE TO MEET:

The event is held at Cambridge City Hall, located in Central Square at 795 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA. Enter through the main door of City Hall and check in at the registration tables on either side of the entrance way. Please also check in with the One Brick Event Manager. The Event Manager will provide more specific details about where to meet as this event gets closer.

The nearest MBTA stop is the Central Square station on the Red Line and can also be accessed by local bus lines which serve Central Square (Buses 1, 47, 64, 70, 70A, 83, 91). There are very few parking options in Central Square - so it is recommended you use public transportation to and from the event.

THE CENTER FOR FAMILIES: The Center for Families is a family support program that serves families of children ages 0 to 8 in Cambridge. The program receives support and oversight from the citywide Cambridge 0-8 Council composed of parents, caregivers and service providers. The Center for Families, begun in 1994 as an initiative of the Kids' Council, is a part of the Department of Human Services Childcare and Family Support Services Division. The Center for Families program receives funds from city, state and federal sources for the extension of family support activities to all parts of Cambridge. Many activities and services are offered through collaborations with community-based organizations.

Mission Statement

One Brick provides support to local non-profit and community organizations by creating a unique, social and flexible volunteer environment for those interested in making a concrete difference in the community. We enable people to get involved, have an impact and have fun, without the requirements of individual long-term commitments.

Description

Headquartered in San Francisco, California, One Brick is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that brings volunteers together to support other local non-profits by adopting an innovative twist to the volunteer experience: we create a friendly and social atmosphere around volunteering, and after each volunteer event -- which typically lasts only 3 to 4 hours -- we invite volunteers to gather at a local restaurant or caf where they can get to know one another in a relaxed social setting.

Our 'commitment-free volunteering' allows you to choose when you volunteer, rather than having to make commitments for a certain number of volunteer hours, or agree to be available every week at a specific time.
