Are you into integers? Excited about exponents? Passionate about polynomials?
Seeds of Literacy, an award-winning nonprofit organization that provides free GED prep and basic education to adults in the Cleveland area, has an urgent need for people like you to volunteer as adult literacy tutors. The shocking truth is that 66% of adults in Cleveland are functionally illiterate and may struggle with everyday tasks like reading a bus schedule, understanding medication labels, and budgeting money.
This is where you can make a very real difference.
The donation of your time, skills, and patience as a tutor can make a life-changing impact for an adult learner right here in our community.
Tutors work one-to-one with students to improve literacy skills, which includes math. Tutors offer encouragement and support, and help students develop positive attitudes towards learning.
Generally we ask that tutors come to one class session per week for one year. We can, however make accommodations for those with special circumstances.
Classes are two hours long, and we offer a flexible class schedule with sessions throughout the daytime and evening to accommodate personal preference and availability.
We have two locations: our west side site is located at 3104 West 25th Street (corner of West 25th and Clark), Cleveland, Ohio, 44109; and our east side site is located at 13815 Kinsman Road (corner of Kinsman and East 139th St.), Cleveland, Ohio, 44120. Both sites offer free and secure parking.
Tutors are especially needed at our east side location. You can join an online training each Monday from 11am-12pm:

Mission Statement
Seeds of Literacy provides personal education that empowers adults to succeed in their communities.
Description
Seeds of Literacy brings together people of diverse backgrounds in order to help break a root cause of poverty: illiteracy.
Since 1997, Seeds of Literacy has provided free, one-to-one tutoring in basic education and GED preparation to adults in Cuyahoga County. A unique curriculum designed and developed by Seeds of Literacy and one-to-one tutoring optimize learning by building relationships of trust between the student and the tutor. Since this approach allows each student to work at her or his own pace and academic level while receiving personal attention and encouragement, students of all academic levels may be able to participate in the program.
Seeds has student retention and graduation rates that are twice the national average, is the only adult literacy program in the county to be nationally accredited by ProLiteracy, and is a 501(c)3 organization.
