Advocate for Disappeared Individuals - Saudi Arabia, Middle East

CIVIC WORKS

There is a practice called 'Enforced Disappearance' in which an individual critical of an authoritarian government is simply kidnapped or disappeared by state actors, without trial or notifying the family. We advocate for these individuals and do not let their cases go unnoticed, especially when the government involved claims to be making progress on human rights, without releasing human rights activists.

Advocacy can be in the form of social media, lobbying Congress and government officials, business contacts, public writing or speaking, or any creative form that volunteers think of - though we do have some standard techniques we use.

We are a little different than other groups in that members are encouraged to come up with ideas and take initiative. We have regular meetings, several team leads and a slack group to support each other in the work. You will have a personal connection to others who care about these issues, and possibly directly to those affected.

** When responding to this opportunity, please include two or more days/times that you are available for an initial phone call ** This helps us more quickly move forward. Thank you!

We work in a small team and support each other through regular calls and online contact. The specific advocacy varies with the situation, but we get advice from experienced groups and individuals to make sure we are not endangering anyone (or at least as sure as we can be)

This is serious work, but we also have fun and it is really rewarding. We do want people who are committed to at least a 3-month time period if possible. The time required is just about 1 hour per week.

Language skills are definitely a plus, but are not required!

Mission Statement

We created civ.works as a platform for all of us to work together to overcome the corrupting influence of money in politics. Together we can address bad policy, legislation and to hold all of our elected officials accountable. For democracy to work -our government must represent "We the People". civ.works: Together. We can.

Description

civ.works is a privacy protected social platform built for meaningful civic action.

The concept of civ.works is to finally provide a societal machine to stand up against something created nearly 50 years ago -and begin the process of empowering citizens again. We are building a platform together -against an incredibly mature and well-funded machine. Your volunteer efforts will be helping us collectively build something powerful and important.
