LivingWorks AfterSchool: Tutor/Mentor Job Description

Make a difference in a young person’s life: be a tutor!

LivingWorks Afterschool seeks tutors to work with students in grades 1-5, 6-8 or 9-12 on math and reading skills and successful completion of homework assignments. Tutors will work with students 1-2 times per week and will learn techniques to help students work towards individualized goals.

Tutor/Mentor Responsibilities (These might differ, depending on which age group you are tutoring.):

- Work with students one-on-one to provide homework assistance and to help students strengthen grade-level math and reading skills

- Assist in assessment of students’ math and reading levels

- Keep log of student activities and progress

- Work with supervisors to create tutoring resources and strategies appropriate to the needs of each student

- Have the option of assisting (in-person only) with extra-curricular activities (grades 1-5 or 6-8), such as art, cooking and science activities

- Meet weekly with students in grades 6-8 in a mentoring capacity

- Meet monthly with students in grades 9-12 in a mentoring capacity

- Serve as a positive role-model to students

- Attend periodic trainings and staff meetings (in-person and online)

- Assist with other small group activities, as needed (in-person)



Schedule: (Please note which ones are in-person and which are online.)

Monday through Thursday:

  • Grades 1-5 and 6-8 homework and reading skills tutoring in person: 4:00-5:30. (The greatest number of tutors is needed during this time slot.)
  • Grades 9-12 homework tutoring: 5:30-6:30 (possibly also 3:15-4:30)

Days per week are flexible based on availability.

Locations: Kilmer Elementary School (6700 N Greenview, Chicago), Living Water Community Church (6808 N Ashland Blvd, Chicago) and/or online.

Orientation and Training:

Online training and orientation are required. New tutors will begin tutoring on January 30, 2023. The online orientation will be on Saturday, January 28, 9:00-12:00.

LivingWorks is uniquely positioned to meet the needs of the youth in the diverse Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago and has a long, proven track record of doing so. It pioneered the first after-school program to support the academic, social, and emotional needs of the students at Joyce Kilmer Elementary School in 1996 and has been carrying the torch ever since then.
