PROGRAM OVERVIEW

We provide free ESL classes on Monday evenings, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, for adults in our community. Many of our students have children and require childcare in order to attend our classes so we also provide free childcare for the children of our students.

If you are interested in working with people from various ethnicities and backgrounds and you enjoy teaching, consider volunteering with us as we seek to support people in our community in this very tangible way. We need people to help teach our English language classes.

Currently, we have a beginners class and an intermediate class. Classroom sizes vary week to week. Generally, we have smaller classroom sizes that hardly every exceed 6:1 student to teacher ratio. We prefer it this way as it allows more flexibility on the teacher’s end to adapt to the students needs and give more individualized support to our students. Due to growing attendance, we are in need of more teachers.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Set up classrooms supplies before class
  • Assist with greeting, registering and checking in students (as needed)
  • Prepare weekly lessons that meet the needs and interests of the students (They will tell you)**
  • Teach lessons that are interactive, engaging and incorporate the four different aspects of language learning (speaking, reading, listening, writing) within the 1.5 hour window**
  • Clean up classroom supplies

**IF you are interested in teaching and have some experience but feel inadequately prepared to develop a lesson plan and/or implement it, we have an experienced teacher who is willing to work with you. You are also encouraged/ welcome to sit in on a class to get a feel for how our classes work.

You may be thinking: "I don’t speak a second or third language? How can I teach English to someone I cannot speak with?" The good news is: You don’t need to know your students native language to help teach them English. In fact, at times it can be detrimental to the students learning.

DUE TO PROXIMITY AND LIKELIHOOD OF INTERACTING WITH OUR STUDENTS' CHILDREN, YOU MUST BE ABLE TO PASS A BACKGROUND CHECK TO WORK WITH CHILDREN
