Do you have an interest in local history from the 1800s? A desire to share knowledge with the public? Enjoy engaging with children and groups of all ages? Then the 1843 Durant House might be a perfect volunteer opportunity for you.

At the Durant House, you will be providing curation of an original farm house from 1843. Learn how the Durants lived, how to do the crafts they did, how to cook using their cookware and the sort of games they played. Local school groups as well as independent families visit the beautiful LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve and go on tours of the house to learn about life and play in the 1800s. This is a costumed, living history position; there are a variety of period appropriate costumes available for you to wear, to truly bring the Druant House to life.

As well as looking for adult volunteers, we are always happy to have child volunteers as well. Our unique volunteer team includes the Prairie Children who also dress up in period appropriate costumes, learn what life would have been like for children at that time, and help teach visiting groups about the house and engage them by teaching visitors games and how to use toys like stilts. This is also a wonderful opportunity to volunteer as a family over the summer.
