Are you passionate about children receiving equitable, excellent music education regardless of their zip code?

Do you support youth in finding their voices and using them in our community to support others and in creating a better world?

Can you connect with your networks, share your expertise, and engage in projects to build upon a deep legacy of musical excellence and ensure it for future generations?

If the thought of serving our students and communities through board service that provides the foundation for our singers to thrive and succeed excites you, we encourage you to apply to join the board for the Oakland Youth Chorus (OYC)!

OYC board members:

  • Provide needed guidance in their areas of expertise
  • Support fundraising and donate personally to the organization at a level significant to them
  • Strategize future direction and participate in projects to further the work
  • Connect OYC to others who are supportive to the mission as our chief ambassadors and advocates!

Legal expertise related to advising on strategic and liability issues, and the connections to resources for questions of employment law and reviewing contracts and copyrights sought to replace 1 outgoing board member, and in our board expansion to ensure strong governance and policy review and development as we grow as an organization.

The Board of Directors meets 8-10 times a year and Board members are expected to volunteer 2 hours a week to OYC, provide governance and engage in strategic planning, fiduciary oversight, contribute to fundraising efforts, and work with the Executive Director to expand OYC's support network and increased visibility for the organization’s sustainability and growth within the community.

Interested candidates may also choose or be asked to serve on a committee for a project as part of getting to know OYC and the board development process. Volunteers who are interested in the organization can often find this to be a good step in discovering whether board service with OYC is a good fit for their interests and service.

About the Oakland Youth Chorus

The Oakland Youth Chorus unites diverse communities and transforms young people’s lives through excellence in music education and community performance.

Founded in 1974, the Oakland Youth Chorus (OYC) is the longest running youth chorus in the East Bay.

OYC welcomes and serves all children and youth, celebrates their cultures and unique strengths, and connects them to each other in the East Bay to use their voices for change needed to bring harmony to our world. We accomplish this through joyful and affirming music education and performance programs that focus on musical excellence at all levels while nurturing the development of the whole child.

Oakland Youth Chorus is currently seeking Board members who are representative of the larger Oakland, Alameda, Richmond, El Cerrito and East Bay communities, with connections in local government, non-profit, foundation, and business communities, the ability to offer expertise or secure volunteer services for the organization, and a willingness to engage in relationship building, fundraising and governance.

Mission Statement

The Oakland Youth Chorus unites diverse communities and transforms young people’s lives through excellence in music education and community performance.

Description

The Oakland Youth Chorus provides Bay Area students of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds with a comprehensive TK-12 multicultural music education. OYC participants develop confidence, collaboration and socio-emotional learning skills, respect for diverse peoples and greater understanding of the world’s cultures. They become global citizens and advocates for community change. Music plays a vital role in a young person’s life. Whether or not a young person pursues music as a profession, OYC provides students with fundamental tools and skills to succeed.

OYC provides school day and after school programs at low or no-cost to families. Music education programs and choral training ensembles are located in schools and community sites throughout Oakland, Alameda, Richmond and El Cerrito for children and youth aged 4-19. Our approach combines repertoire from cultures around the world, performance opportunities, and a concrete foundation in music literacy. Students at every level of our programming enjoy opportunities to travel with the Chorus to perform for local schools, organizations and cultural events.
